My Training
My Story
I have received training and competency verification in breastfeeding and human lactation support including assessing the latching and feeding process, providing corrective interventions, counseling mothers, understanding and applying knowledge of milk production and other commonly encountered situations, while giving both moms and babies the best advantage right from the start. I am a member of a health care team who can provide knowledge and counseling about optimal and sub-optimal breastfeeding. I understand that breastfeeding decisions are made by the mother, who may have values and goals different from the counselor. A counseling approach is used to gather information and provide appropriate support to the mother and her family. I work as part of the health care team, assuring appropriate referrals and recommendations. I provide breastfeeding counseling and lactation management in:• Maternity units in hospitals and birth centers.• Neonatal intensive care units and special care nurseries.• Outpatient lactation clinics.• Visiting nurse programs.• Maternal and child health services at the state, county and local level.• Parenting centers, including family support centers.• Physician and midwife offices.
My Philosophy
As a peer counselor I am a mother of three (3) who has had personal experience with breastfeeding. I am trained to provide breastfeeding information and support to other mothers with whom may share various characteristics, such as language, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Peer counselors reinforce breastfeeding recommendations in a socially and culturally appropriate context, and promote breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the mother and baby. I can also provide mother-to-mother support in group settings and one-to-one counselling through telephone calls or visits in the home, clinic, or hospital.
